Veteran politician and former Karnataka Chief Minister SM Krishna, renowned for propelling Bengaluru onto the global stage, passed away at his Bengaluru residence early this morning at the age of 92. Krishna, who also served as India’s External Affairs Minister, breathed his last around 2:45 am after a prolonged illness.

The Karnataka government has announced a three-day state mourning to honor the departed leader, and his last rites will be conducted with full state honors tomorrow in Mandya district, his birthplace.

A Visionary Leader Who Transformed Bengaluru

Born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli, Mandya district, SM Krishna was a pivotal figure in Bengaluru’s rise as an international tech hub. During his tenure as Chief Minister (1999–2004), his emphasis on infrastructure and IT sector growth earned the city its title as the “Silicon Valley of India.”

After a distinguished political journey with the Congress, Krishna joined the BJP in the later years of his career, showcasing his adaptability and enduring political relevance.

Tributes Pour In from Leaders Across the Nation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound grief, describing Krishna as a “remarkable leader” who worked tirelessly for societal betterment. “He is fondly remembered for his tenure as Karnataka’s Chief Minister, particularly for his focus on infrastructural development. Shri SM Krishna Ji was also a prolific reader and thinker,” the Prime Minister said.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah shared his shock and sorrow over the loss, lauding Krishna’s unparalleled service as Chief Minister and Union Minister. “Karnataka will always be indebted to him for his contribution to the growth of the IT-BT sector,” he stated, adding a personal note of gratitude for Krishna’s guidance during his early days in politics.
