In what marked the largest anti-Trump demonstration since his return to office, tens of thousands of Americans rallied across the country on Saturday under the banner “Hands Off!” The protests, which spanned over 1,200 locations in all 50 states, drew participants from diverse backgrounds and were supported by more than 150 organisations, including civil rights groups, labor unions, LGBTQ advocates, and veterans’ organizations.
From the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to Boston Common and Midtown Manhattan, the rallies aimed to voice opposition to President Donald Trump’s policies, government downsizing efforts led by Elon Musk, and recent attacks on LGBTQ rights, Social Security, immigration, and civil liberties.
Peaceful Rallies Across the Nation
Demonstrators marched peacefully in major cities including Seattle, where protesters gathered near the Space Needle holding placards reading “Fight the oligarchy.” In Columbus, Ohio, hundreds gathered at the Statehouse, expressing frustration over the current administration.
Roger Broom, 66, a retiree from Delaware County, said:
“He’s tearing this country apart. It’s just an administration of grievances.”
Meanwhile, in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, protesters lined PGA Drive as Trump attended the Senior Club Championship in nearby Jupiter. Chanting slogans and waving signs, they urged passing vehicles to honk in support of the cause.
Elon Musk and Government Downsizing
A key figure drawing protest was Elon Musk, Trump adviser and head of the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Musk has spearheaded controversial downsizing initiatives, claiming the efforts are saving taxpayers billions.

Critics say the cost-cutting measures are coming at the expense of human rights, healthcare, and education.
LGBTQ Rights, Immigration, and Democracy Under Fire
At the rally in Washington, Kelley Robinson, president of the Human Rights Campaign, denounced the administration’s treatment of the LGBTQ community.
“The attacks that we’re seeing, they’re not just political — they are personal, y’all,” Robinson said. “They’re trying to ban our books, slash HIV prevention funding, and criminalise our doctors, our teachers, our families and our lives.”
In Boston, Mayor Michelle Wu addressed the crowd with a powerful message on immigration and equality:
“I refuse to accept that [my children] could grow up in a world where immigrants like their grandma and grandpa are automatically presumed to be criminals.”
White House Responds
The White House issued a statement defending President Trump’s policies:
“President Trump’s position is clear: he will always protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid for eligible beneficiaries. Meanwhile, the Democrats’ stance is giving Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare benefits to illegal aliens, which will bankrupt these programs and crush American seniors.”
Growing Opposition Movement
Saturday’s “Hands Off!” rallies signal a resurgence in public opposition to Trump’s presidency, with the coordinated efforts representing the broadest coalition of resistance seen since the early weeks of his administration.
