A case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act has been registered against unknown labourers after allegations surfaced that a Class II student was harassed by a mason working on the premises of a prominent all-girls school in North Kolkata.
The incident triggered protests by parents outside the school on Thursday, demanding strict action and increased security measures.
Labourers Detained, Work Suspended
Police sources revealed that 11 labourers were hired by the school for plaster and painting work. Following the complaint, three of the workers fled, while the remaining eight have been detained for questioning. No arrests have been made as of Friday night, officials confirmed.
The ongoing construction work has now been suspended. Police are continuing the investigation and have assured the school authorities and parents that the culprits will be identified.

Parents Demand More Safety Measures
After Thursday’s protest, the school management — including the secretary, headmistress, and other officials — met concerned parents to address their grievances.
Among the demands raised by parents were:
- Suspension of construction work during school hours
- Increase in ayahs (female attendants) for better student supervision
- Installation of more CCTV cameras for enhanced surveillance
“The parents have asked for additional help, and we will deploy two more ayahs starting Monday. We are also reviewing the CCTV coverage inside the school,” the school secretary said.
Classes were suspended on Friday in response to the incident, but the school confirmed that classes will resume on Monday.
School Assures Prompt Response
School officials stressed that the student’s complaint was not ignored. “The allegation is that a mason offered candy to the child. The girl informed her mother on Tuesday, and the school became aware of the matter on Wednesday through another parent. The headmistress immediately spoke to the child to understand what happened,” an official stated.
The school reiterated its commitment to student safety and assured that further security measures will be implemented promptly.
