Following Singapore’s recent ban on the sale of MDH and Everest spices due to high levels of contaminants, Hong Kong has also announced a similar prohibition. The decision comes after tests conducted by both the countries revealed the presence of harmful substances in these popular spice brands.

On April 5, the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s Centre for Food Safety declared that regular surveillance programmes had detected ethylene oxide in three MDH Group spice mixes: Madras Curry Powder, Sambhar Masala Powder, and Curry Powder.

Singapore’s ban on MDH and Everest spices was announced earlier this week after tests detected high levels of aflatoxins, a group of toxins produced by certain fungi that can cause liver damage and increase the risk of liver cancer. Hong Kong’s decision to ban the sale of these spices underscores the seriousness of the issue and the potential health risks associated with consuming contaminated products.

Both MDH and Everest are well-known brands in the spice industry, with a large customer base across Asia and beyond. The bans in Singapore and Hong Kong are expected to have a significant impact on the companies’ sales and reputation.

Singapore and Hong Kong have both responded to the results by taking steps to safeguard public health. Parallel to this, Singapore removed Everest’s items from its stores due to the presence of pesticides over permissible limits.

Consumers are advised to be vigilant when purchasing spices and to check for any recalls or advisories issued by the authorities. It is crucial to prioritize food safety and to avoid consuming products that may pose a health risk.
