Following his removal from the position of Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) West Bengal general secretary, Kunal Ghosh made startling revelations, asserting that the party leadership was aware of the school recruitment scam prior to the 2021 assembly elections.
Kunal Ghosh, considered close to TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, disclosed this critical information during the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, where the SSC scam has emerged as a significant electoral issue.
The removal of Kunal Ghosh from his post came shortly after he shared a platform with a BJP Lok Sabha candidate and commended him, leading to speculations about his political allegiance.
In an interview with a Bengali news channel, Ghosh said, “The party was well aware that large-scale corruption and extortion related to job recruitments were occurring within the school education department, even before the 2021 assembly polls.”

Kunal Ghosh, advocating for more prominence for next-generation leaders and facing resistance from established TMC figures, highlighted that it was this “information about large-scale corruption” that prompted the shifting of Partha Chatterjee from the education ministry to the industry department after TMC secured a third consecutive term in 2021.
The comments made by Kunal Ghosh followed closely on the heels of a significant development in the Calcutta High Court, which deemed the recruitment process for the State Level Selection Test-2016 (SLST) in West Bengal government-affiliated schools as “null and void.”
This ruling led to the annulment of approximately 26,000 appointments made through this process. Until then, TMC leadership had maintained ignorance of the scam until Chatterjee’s arrest in 2022.
Partha Chatterjee, a prominent TMC leader, was apprehended by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in July 2022 for his alleged involvement in the SSC scam.
Subsequently, the party ousted Chatterjee from both his ministerial position and TMC membership. The scandal further deepened with the arrests of several other TMC figures, including MLA Manik Bhattacharya and Jiban Krishna Saha, by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on related charges.
