In a significant move, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has terminated the employment of 223 contractual employees of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW). The action was taken based on allegations that AAP MP Swati Maliwal, during her tenure as chairperson of DCW, made these appointments in violation of regulations.
The order issued by the office of the Lieutenant Governor refers to the Delhi Commission for Women Act, noting that the panel has an approved staff strength of 40 employees.
However, it states that 223 additional positions were created without the necessary approval from the Lieutenant Governor. Furthermore, the commission was reportedly not authorised to hire employees on a contractual basis.
Additionally, the order highlights that the commission was instructed not to undertake any actions that would impose additional financial burdens on the government without prior approval from the finance department.

The decision to terminate the employment of these contractual workers follows a probe that concluded the appointments were made outside established procedures.
The order also criticizes the increase in remuneration and allowances provided to DCW staff, deeming it unjustified and contrary to prescribed guidelines.
This crackdown underscores the importance of adhering to administrative protocols and financial regulations within government bodies. The termination of these contracts reflects efforts to uphold transparency and accountability in public sector appointments and expenditure.
The Delhi Commission for Women is expected to comply with the directives issued by the Lieutenant Governor’s office and take corrective actions as necessary to ensure adherence to legal and procedural frameworks governing the commission’s operations and staffing.
