The sacred Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj witnessed an overwhelming influx of devotees on Wednesday as hundreds of thousands gathered for the final holy dip of the Maha Kumbh Mela on the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri. The six-week-long religious congregation, which has drawn millions of pilgrims, is set to conclude later today.
Significance of Mahashivratri at Kumbh Mela
Mahashivratri holds deep spiritual importance as it marks the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. In the context of the Kumbh Mela, it is a day of immense religious significance, believed to bestow ‘moksha’ (liberation) upon devotees who take a dip in the holy waters of the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva played a pivotal role in the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), which led to the emergence of the Amrit Kumbh (nectar pitcher) that forms the essence of the Kumbh Mela tradition.
Massive Crowds Witnessed at the Sangam
Devotees began arriving at the ghats from midnight, eager to perform the sacred bath at ‘Brahma Muhurt’ before sunrise. As per government data:
- By 2 AM, over 11.66 lakh devotees had taken a dip at the Sangam.
- By 4 AM, the number surged to 25.64 lakh.
- By 6 AM, nearly 41.11 lakh devotees had participated in the ritual.
- Over one crore devotees are expected to complete their holy dip by the end of the day.
Ahead of the final bathing ritual, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath extended his wishes to all saints, Kalpvasis, and devotees. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote: “Hearty wishes to all the revered saints, Kalpvasis, and devotees who have come to take a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam today on the holy bathing festival of Mahashivratri dedicated to the worship of Lord Bholenath in Mahakumbh-2025, Prayagraj. May Tribhuvanpati Lord Shiva and holy river Mother Ganga bless everyone. This is my prayer. Har Har Mahadev!”
