Kolkata: A day after a Kolkata-based businessman was murdered, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee cut short her stay in north Bengal to meet his family members in the city.
The businessman, Bhavya Lakhani, was found murdered and packed inside a gunny bag from underneath a water tanker at the residence of his partner. The police believe it was a pre-planned murder and so does Banerjee.
Cutting short her prior engagements, Banerjee visited the grieving family after receiving news of the tragedy. She denounced the brutal act, highlighting Lakhani’s innocence and the calculated nature of the crime, allegedly perpetrated by his business partner who lured him to his demise.
Banerjee, who had intended to attend a meeting in Siliguri, altered her plans to prioritize the situation at hand and console the businessman’s family.

Meanwhile, Kolkata Police apprehended two suspects, Anirban Gupta and Suman Das, in connection with the murder. According to information, Gupta had lent Lakhani some money.
Assuring stringent measures against the culprits, Banerjee announced that the homicide division of the Kolkata Police would oversee the investigation. The initial probe was undertaken by the Nimta police in the North 24 Parganas district.
Interrogations revealed that the perpetrators had bludgeoned Lakhani during an altercation and had subsequently concealed the body. Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, accompanying Banerjee during her visit, disclosed the details to the media, emphasizing the premeditated nature of the crime.
Forensic examinations corroborated the assault, indicating visible injuries on Lakhani’s body. The investigation is on as the authorities are now awaiting the autopsy reports and are gathering additional evidence to bring justice to the victim and his family.
