The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, which was passed by the Uttarakhand Assembly on February 7, has now been enacted into law following the assent of President Droupadi Murmu.
Uttarakhand has become the first state in India post-Independence to adopt the UCC. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed immense joy and pride in this development, stating that it marks a significant milestone for the state. President Murmu granted her assent to the Uniform Civil Code, Uttarakhand, 2024 under Article 201 of the Constitution of India on March 11, as per a gazette notification issued by the Uttarakhand government.
CM Dhami emphasized that the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code law will not only ensure equal rights for all citizens but also help in curbing the oppression of women. He underscored the role of the UCC in fostering social equality and promoting harmony in the state.
Furthermore, Dhami reiterated the state government’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of its citizens and upholding Uttarakhand’s essential character, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision.
State BJP president Mahendra Bhatt and Uttarakhand BJP media in-charge Manveer Chauhan also expressed satisfaction over the President’s approval of the UCC. Bhatt highlighted that the enactment of the UCC would guarantee equal rights for all citizens, fulfilling a significant commitment made by the party to the people of Uttarakhand ahead of the 2022 state assembly polls.
