Kolkata Police have confirmed that Monojit Mishra, the prime accused in the alleged rape of a 24 year-old law student at South Calcutta Law College, has a long history of criminal behaviour. Mishra, 31, a practising criminal lawyer at Alipore court, has been chargesheeted in several cases, including harassment, assault, theft, and vandalism, across multiple police jurisdictions in Kolkata.
“Mishra is a history-sheeter with several cases and chargesheets against him in the Kolkata Police jurisdiction,” a senior officer said. Cases have been registered against him at Kalighat, Kasba, Alipore, Haridevpur, and Tollygunge police stations.
He was arrested on June 25 along with three others Zaib Ahmed (19), Pramit Mukherjee (20), and Pinaki Banerjee, a security guard after the alleged assault took place in a guardroom on the college campus between 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM.
Criminal Past and Political Links Under Scrutiny as SIT Takes Over Investigation
Monojit Mishra is not a first-time offender. Police records show that in 2019, he allegedly assaulted a woman inside the same college, and was chargesheeted for it. Later that year, he was accused of stealing valuables including a gold chain and perfume from a friend’s home in Haridevpur on New Year’s Eve.

In March 2022, a harassment case was filed against him in Kasba. Most recently, in May 2024, the college administration lodged a complaint accusing him of assaulting a security guard and vandalising property.
Despite studying at the college four years ago, Mishra had been informally associated with the institution until recently. On social media, he described himself as a former head of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) student wing at the law college.
The TMC has since distanced itself from him. A five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by an Assistant Commissioner-rank officer has been formed to probe the case. A senior police official confirmed, “An SIT has been formed to probe into the alleged crime. It will start its investigation immediately.”

The survivor, a first-year law student, has alleged that Mishra pressured her to marry him and threatened to kill her boyfriend and frame her parents when she refused. Medical examination has corroborated her claims with “evidence of forceful penetration, bite marks, and nail scratches,” according to the police.
Investigators have also recovered a 1 minute 30 second video from one of the accused’s phones which reportedly supports the survivor’s testimony. “We have found a video clip… which corroborates the statements made by the victim in her complaint,” the officer added.
