Kolkata Law College Rape: Kolkata was once again shaken by a horrific crime against a woman as a 24-year-old was allegedly gang-raped inside the campus of a law college earlier this week. The police have arrested three individuals in connection with the case, including two students and a former student, who currently serves as a student wing leader of the Trinamool Congress.
The incident took place on Wednesday, according to the complaint lodged by the survivor. She had visited the college around 12 pm to complete examination-related formalities. While waiting inside the union room, she was allegedly confined after the main college gate was locked on the instructions of the accused. The woman was then assaulted inside the security guard’s room within the college premises.
TMC Student Leader Named Main Accused, Forensic Probe Underway
Police have identified the accused as Monojit Mishra (31), a former student and unit president of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), along with Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20), both current students. Mishra and Ahmed were apprehended on June 26 near Talbagan Crossing, while Mukherjee was arrested from his residence in the early hours of June 27. All their mobile phones were seized as part of the investigation.
A preliminary medical examination of the survivor has been completed, and statements from multiple witnesses have been recorded. The college campus, including the location of the alleged assault, has been sealed and is pending forensic examination.

The trio was presented before the Alipore court on Thursday. While the police sought 14-day custody, the court granted remand till the coming Tuesday to continue the investigation.
Political Fallout: Opposition Slams Bengal Government Over Law and Order
The incident has sparked a strong political backlash. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari criticised the Mamata Banerjee-led administration, alleging negligence and lack of policing in the city. “The entire Kolkata Police has been taken to Digha for Rath Yatra. What is the police doing there? The Chief Minister has no right to remain in office,” he said.
BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya called the incident “horrific” in a post on X, noting the involvement of a TMC-affiliated student leader. He accused the state government of failing to curb crimes against women and referenced the earlier RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case, saying, “West Bengal under Mamata Banerjee has become a nightmare for women.”
