In a joint operation today in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district, three terrorists were shot dead by the Indian Army’s Special Forces and the Jammu and Kashmir Police. The operation is still ongoing, and security forces involved include 1 Para, 22 Garhwal Rifles, and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the police.
This comes amid heightened vigilance ahead of the upcoming elections in the Union Territory, scheduled to begin on September 18, with security forces on high alert. Earlier today, a BSF soldier was injured due to unprovoked firing by Pakistani forces in the Akhnoor sector.
The situation underscores the security challenges along the India-Pakistan international border, which spans approximately 3,323 km and remains a region of significant military activity and tension.
The long-delayed Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, which have been pending since 2014, are set to be held on September 18, September 25, and October 1, with the results expected to be declared on October 4, as per the Election Commission.

This development is a key milestone in complying with the Supreme Court’s directive to restore democracy in Jammu and Kashmir by September 30. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently promised that elections would take place soon, along with the reinstatement of statehood.

Meanwhile, as the election season heats up in Jammu and Kashmir, In a surprising turn of events that may alter the political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir, Sahil Farooq, the Congress Ganderbal district president, has filed his nomination as an Independent candidate from the Ganderbal Assembly constituency.
This move positions him in direct competition with National Conference (NC) Vice President and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, despite the existing pre-poll alliance between Congress and NC.
Surrounded by a group of young supporters, Farooq voiced his frustration with the current representation of Ganderbal, stating, “Candidates are parachuted in to represent Ganderbal, but the youth here have decided not to surrender their political future to outsiders anymore.”
