The long-awaited Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, pending since 2014, will finally take place on September 18, September 25, and October 1, with the results scheduled to be announced on October 4, according to the Election Commission.
This announcement marks a significant step towards fulfilling the Supreme Court’s order for the return of democracy to Jammu and Kashmir by September 30. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently assured that an election would be held soon, along with the restoration of statehood.
In June, thetheorist.in had reported that the Election Commission of Indian is preparing to hold the Assembly elections soon.
Preparations for the Elections
In preparation for the Jammu and Kashmir elections, the Election Commission has announced that the final voter list will be published by August 20, just after the conclusion of the Amarnath Yatra.
An estimated 87 lakh voters are expected to participate in this crucial election. Election Commission chief Rajiv Kumar emphasized the public’s desire for change and their enthusiasm for participating in the democratic process. “The people want change… they want to script a new future,” Kumar stated, reflecting the optimism surrounding the upcoming elections.

Kumar also recalled the “long queues” at polling booths during previous elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, which he described as evidence that “people not only want change but also want to become part of that change.” He highlighted the significance of the upcoming elections as a “glimpse of hope and democracy,” where people are choosing “ballots over bullets” in shaping their future.
Security Measures and Recent Developments
In preparation for the elections, a team from the Election Commission, led by Rajiv Kumar, recently visited Jammu and Kashmir to assess election readiness. During their visit, they met with representative of political parties, senior police officer, and security officials to ensure a smooth and secure election process.
This marks the third visit by the Election Commission to the region since 2019, following visits related to the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

In the lead-up to the election date announcement, a significant reshuffle of senior police officers took place in Jammu and Kashmir, including district chiefs and the head of J&K Police’s Intelligence unit. This reshuffle comes amidst heightened security concerns, with several districts in Jammu experiencing increased terror attacks.
The Supreme Court had previously directed the Election Commission to hold Assembly polls by September 30 of this year, following petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into union territories.
While the court upheld the Article 370 decision, it emphasized the importance of restoring a democratically elected government in Jammu and Kashmir and the restoration of statehood as soon as possible. The upcoming Assembly elections are seen as a crucial step towards achieving these goals.
