New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a stern warning as parts of India braced for scorching temperatures in the coming days. With a cyclonic circulation over Bihar and another over south Assam, the IMD on Thursday predicted a surge in heat wave conditions across various regions.
However, the agency also forecast a significant increase in temperatures, leading to a heat wave gripping several areas.
The IMD warned of heat wave conditions in isolated pockets over West Madhya Pradesh on 28th; North Interior Karnataka on 28th and 29th; and Vidarbha on 29th and 30th March, 2024. Additionally, warm nights are expected in isolated pockets over Gujarat, Marathwada, and Madhya Maharashtra on 28th and 29th March.
On Thursday, maximum temperatures soared to 40-42°C in several regions including West Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Gujarat Region, Marathwada, Madhya Maharashtra, and West Rajasthan, exceeding normal levels by 3-4°C. Currently, maximum temperatures are exceeding the 95th percentile of climatological value at many places, indicating an intense heat wave.
The IMD forecast also indicated isolated to scattered rainfall and snowfall with isolated thunderstorms and lightning likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on the 28th and 29th March.
“Isolated heavy rainfall/snowfall is very likely over Arunachal Pradesh and Assam & Meghalaya on 30th March & 01st April, and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh & Assam & Meghalaya on 31st March, 2024,” the IMD stated.
The situation is exacerbated by a Western Disturbance. This disturbance, coupled with induced cyclonic circulations, is expected to bring fairly widespread to widespread light rainfall and snowfall with isolated thunderstorms and lightning over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand during 28th-31st March.
With no significant relief expected in the next few days, the IMD urged residents to take precautionary measures to combat the heat wave. For further details and updates, people were advised to visit https://mausam.imd.gov.in or contact 011-2434-4599.
