Mumbai: In a move that adds a touch of glamour to the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra, Bollywood actor Govinda officially joined Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena on Thursday.
The actor, who is set to make a comeback to politics after a hiatus, is reportedly eyeing the Mumbai North West constituency for his electoral bid.
Govinda’s foray into politics dates back to 2004 when he contested from Mumbai North Lok Sabha on a Congress ticket and secured victory against the BJP’s Ram Naik, earning the epithet of a giant-slayer. However, Govinda later resigned from the party and took a break from political engagements altogether.
Expressing his gratitude upon joining Shiv Sena, Govinda said, “I am joining Shiv Sena and it is a blessing of God. I thought I would not enter politics again.” He was formally inducted into the party by Eknath Shinde, who leads the Maharashtra government.
Govinda also commended the efforts of Eknath Shinde, noting that Mumbai appears cleaner and improved under his leadership. Additionally, he mentioned his parents’ favourable association with Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray.
The speculations surrounding Govinda’s potential return to politics gained momentum after his recent meeting with Eknath Shinde. Thursday morning saw Sena leader Krishna Hedge visiting the actor at his residence in Juhu.
While Govinda remained tight-lipped about his electoral aspirations, Eknath Shinde assured that the actor’s entry into the party comes with no conditions or prerequisites.
