Hours after India’s objection against state department’s comment on arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and freezing of account of main opposition party Congress, the United States (US) has again reacted over both the issues.

US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said that the country is closely following these actions.

The US Spokesperson on Wednesday batted for a “fair, transparent, timely legal processes” for both the cases. His remark came in reply to a questions on India summoning American diplomat Gloria Berbena, the US Acting Deputy Chief of Mission in New Delhi on Wednesday regarding the remark made on Kejriwal’s arrest in connection with the alleged Delhi Excise Policy scam case.

While reacting to the freezing of Congress party’s account, Miller said that they are also aware about the allegation that tax authorities have frozen some of the bank accounts of the Congress party in a manner that will make it challenging to effectively campaign in the upcoming elections.

“With respect to your first question, I’m not going to talk about any private diplomatic conversations, but of course, what we have said publicly is what I just said from here, that we encourage fair, transparent, timely legal processes. We don’t think anyone should object to that,” Miller said.

On Tuesday, the US State Department had stated that the country is keeping an eye on the development related to the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal and also advocated for “a fair and timely legal process” for the arrested Chief Minister.

India, however, strongly objected to the US remark, saying, “India’s legal processes are based on an independent judiciary which is committed to objective and timely outcomes. Casting aspersions on that is unwarranted.” The statement was issued by the Indian Foreign Affairs ministry.

“In diplomacy, states are expected to be respectful of the sovereignty and internal affairs of others. This responsibility is even more so in case of fellow democracies. It could otherwise end up setting unhealthy precedents,” the statement added.

A day earlier, Germany’s Foreign Office stressed that Arvind Kejriwal is entitled to a fair and impartial trial. The Indian government reacted strongly and summoned the German envoy, labelling their remark as a “blatant interference in internal matters”.
