The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a ‘red alert’ for Mumbai and its suburbs after two consecutive days of intense downpour across Maharashtra. According to the weather bureau’s nowcast issued at 10:30 am, heavy rain was expected until noon, followed by very heavy rainfall through the day.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, heavy to very heavy showers, and gusty winds reaching 30–40 kmph are likely at isolated locations in Marathwada. In Konkan-Goa, several areas may witness heavy to very heavy rainfall, with the possibility of extremely heavy showers in isolated spots.
The Ghat regions of Madhya Maharashtra are also expected to receive heavy to very heavy rain, with extremely heavy rainfall in some areas, the IMD stated.
“Moderate to heavy rain/thundershowers are very likely at most places in Konkan-Goa, while light to moderate rain/thundershowers are expected across Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada,” the department added, warning that heavy rainfall in the region is likely to persist until August 23.
Waterlogging, Traffic Disruption in Mumbai
Heavy rain lashed Mumbai on Monday, causing severe waterlogging and bringing traffic to a halt in several parts of the city. Traffic on the Western Express Highway near Vile Parle slowed considerably, while flooding was also reported in the Gandhi Market area of Sion.
