Mumbai has been reeling under relentless rain since Friday night, leaving several neighbourhoods inundated, road traffic paralysed, and flight operations disrupted. Officials confirmed that two people were killed and two others injured after a landslide struck a residential society in Varsha Nagar, Vikhroli West, on Saturday. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said rescue teams are working to clear debris at the site.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has upgraded its warning to a red alert for Mumbai and neighbouring Raigad district, forecasting extremely heavy rain at isolated locations. Residents have been urged to remain cautious as the downpour is expected to continue over the next few hours.
Waterlogging was reported in multiple areas, including Sion, Kurla, Chembur and Andheri. Around one to one-and-a-half feet of water accumulated on Shanmukhanand Hall Road in Sion, while vehicles were stranded on the Western Express Highway. Authorities also closed the Andheri subway due to flooding, further affecting commuter movement.

Between 8:30 a.m. Friday and 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Vikhroli recorded 248.5 mm of rainfall, followed by Santacruz at 232.5 mm and Sion at 221 mm.

The overnight spell between 11 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Saturday saw Marol Fire Department logging 216 mm, Santacruz’s Nariyalwadi School recording 213 mm, and Tagore Nagar School in Vikhroli matching the same. Other locations, including Dadar Fire Department and Worli Seaface, registered over 130 mm in just five hours.
The heavy rain also impacted air travel. Mumbai airport operations faced delays, with IndiGo Airlines advising passengers to check flight statuses before heading to the terminal. “Our teams are closely monitoring the situation to ease any delays and support you at every step,” the airline said.
