A district court in Chandigarh has issued a notice to Bollywood actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut regarding her controversial film Emergency. The notice follows an application filed by Advocate Ravinder Singh Bassi, the former president of the District Bar Association, who claimed that the film attempts to tarnish the image of the Sikh community.
The advocate alleges that the film portrays a distorted image of Sikhs and contains false allegations against the community, prompting him to seek legal action against Kangana Ranaut. The court has scheduled the next hearing on this matter for December 5.
Sikh Organizations’ Objections to the Film
Emergency has been at the center of a major controversy since its announcement. Prominent Sikh organizations, including the Shiromani Akali Dal, have accused the film of misrepresenting historical facts related to the Sikh community. The controversy has put Kangana Ranaut’s directorial venture under intense scrutiny.
Amid the controversy, Kangana Ranaut disclosed that the film’s release delays have forced her to sell her Mumbai property. Reports suggest that she sold her bungalow at Pali Hill in Bandra for Rs 32 crore due to financial constraints. She remarked, “I had staked my personal property on this film, which was supposed to come in theatres. Now it is not releasing, so the property is there, to be sold off in difficult times.”

The Film’s Background
Emergency is a political drama based on the Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975. Written and directed by Kangana Ranaut, the movie also features actors Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Mahima Chaudhry, and Milind Soman in pivotal roles. The film is co-produced by Zee Studios and Ranaut’s production company, Manikarnika Films.
Initially scheduled for release last year, the film’s launch was postponed several times due to various reasons, including the Lok Sabha elections. Despite the plans to release it on September 6, it remains uncertain when the movie will hit theatres due to the lack of a censor certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Legal Battle for the Film’s Release
Earlier this month, Zee Entertainment Enterprises sought intervention from the Bombay High Court to clear the film for release. However, the court declined to provide any urgent relief, leaving the film’s release date in limbo.
