Singer Adnan Sami, who was born in Lahore and received Indian citizenship in 2015, recently shared a striking encounter with Pakistani nationals in Baku, Azerbaijan. The musician claimed the individuals expressed frustration with their homeland’s military and praised his decision to move to India.
‘We Also Want to Change Our Citizenship’
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Sami wrote:
“Met some very sweet Pakistani boys while walking on the beautiful streets of Baku, Azerbaijan…They said, ‘Sir, you are very lucky.. You left Pakistan in good time.. We also want to change our citizenship…WE HATE OUR ARMY…They have destroyed our country!!'”
Sami responded with:
“‘I knew this long ago!'”

Past Criticism of Pakistan’s Establishment
In 2022, Adnan Sami had openly criticised the Pakistani establishment while expressing appreciation for the people of Pakistan. On Instagram, he shared:
“Many people ask me why I have such contempt towards Pakistan. The hard truth is that I have absolutely no contempt towards the people of Pakistan who have been good to me. I love everyone who loves me—period. However, I have major issues with the establishment. Those who truly know me will also know what that establishment did to me for many years which ultimately became one of the big reasons for me to leave Pak.”

Clashes with Fawad Hussain
Most recently, Sami responded to former Pakistani minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain, who questioned his Indian citizenship in the wake of India asking Pakistani nationals to leave following the Pahalgam terror attack. Sami hit back sharply, calling Fawad an “illiterate idiot.”
Background on Citizenship
Adnan Sami first arrived in India in 2001 on a visitor visa. After his Pakistani passport expired in 2015 and was not renewed, he approached Indian authorities on humanitarian grounds. He was officially granted Indian citizenship in December 2015.
