Singer Sonu Nigam may be facing a potential ban from the Kannada film industry following a backlash over his recent remarks on the Kannada language during a concert in Bengaluru. The singer’s comments, which surfaced in a viral video, have sparked outrage and triggered discussions within the Karnataka film fraternity.
Kannada Film Industry Responds Strongly
According to a report by News18, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce is set to hold a crucial meeting on Monday, May 5, in Bengaluru. Representatives from key associations, including the Music Directors Association, Directors Association, and Producers Association, are expected to be in attendance.
The meeting will reportedly include discussions on “the possibility of refraining from engaging Sonu Nigam for Kannada movies in future projects.” The report further suggests that prominent composers such as Sadhu Kokila, Harikrishna, Arjun Janya, and Dharma Vish are also expected to participate in the discussions.
Industry ‘Let Down’ by Remarks
The Kannada film industry is reportedly feeling “let down” by Nigam’s comments during his April 25 performance at a college event in Bengaluru. The incident came to light after a video showed Nigam responding sharply to members of the audience who were demanding he sing in Kannada.

What Sonu Nigam Said
While addressing the crowd during the live concert, Sonu Nigam paused his performance to respond to persistent calls of “Kannada, Kannada” from the audience. Visibly frustrated, he remarked: “Kannada. Kannada. This is the reason behind the incident in Pahalgam.”
This statement drew immediate backlash and led to a police complaint. An FIR was subsequently filed against the singer at Avalahalli Police Station in Bengaluru.
Sonu Nigam’s Clarification
In response to the controversy, Sonu Nigam released a clarification video on Instagram. He stated that he was “threatened” by a small group of individuals at the concert who insisted he sing in Kannada. Nigam urged viewers “not to generalise” or blame the entire Kannada-speaking community for the actions of a few.
Looking Ahead
As tensions remain high, the outcome of the upcoming meeting by the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce could determine the singer’s future association with the Kannada film industry. The controversy underscores the sensitivity surrounding language and cultural identity in regional entertainment sectors.
