13 winning candidates or 33 percent have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.
New Delhi: The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has analysed affidavits of all the 40 winning candidates of the Goa Assembly Elections and found out that 16 of them, or 40 per cent, have declared their criminal cases. Out of the 40 MLAs analysed during the Goa Assembly election in 2017, nine MLAs or 23 per cent had declared criminal cases against themselves.
Of the 16 winning candidates of the recently-concluded election, 13 winning candidates or 33 per cent have declared serious criminal cases against themselves. Out of the 40 MLAs analysed in 2017 election, six MLAs or 15 per cent had declared serious criminal cases against themselves.
Two winning candidates have declared cases related to crimes against women and of the two, one candidate has declared cases related to rape (Section 376 of the IPC).
ADR’s analysis has said that seven or 35 per cent out of the 20 winning candidates from BJP, seven or 64 per cent of the 11 winning candidates from Congress, one or 50 per cent of the two winning candidates from Maharashtrawadi Gomantak and one or 100 per cent winning candidate from the Goa Forward Party have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
It has further said that six or 30 per cent out of the 20 winning candidates from BJP, six or 55 per cent out of the 11 winning candidates from Congress and one or 50 per cent out of the two winning candidates from Maharashtrawadi Gomantak have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits. The analysis has also revealed that out of the 40 winning candidates analysed, 39 or 98 per cent are crorepatis. Out of the 40 MLAs analysed during the assembly elections in 2017, 40 or 100 per cent MLAs were crorepatis.
