Fresh violence has erupted in the northeastern state of Manipur after a suspected rocket or bomb attack killed two children in Bishnupur district, prompting protests and a sweeping suspension of mobile internet services across five districts.
According to multiple reports, the attack took place in the early hours of April 7 at Tronglaobi Awang Leikai in Bishnupur district. A projectile—suspected to be a rocket or mortar—struck a residential house, killing a five-year-old boy and his infant sister.

The blast also left their mother seriously injured. The incident occurred in a sensitive zone along the hill-valley boundary, an area that has witnessed repeated tensions in recent months. While officials have not publicly identified those responsible, the nature of the attack has raised concerns about the use of high-grade weapons.
Manipur Rocket Attack: State leadership condemns attack
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh condemned the killings, describing the incident as a grave act of violence and assuring that those responsible would be brought to justice. He also reviewed the situation and directed authorities to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured survivor.
The killings triggered widespread protests in Bishnupur and nearby areas, with angry residents demanding accountability and stronger security measures. The demonstrations escalated in some locations, leading to clashes with security forces.
Reports indicate that police opened fire in an attempt to control the situation, resulting in injuries to several protesters.
Internet suspended across five districts
In response to the deteriorating law and order situation, authorities imposed a temporary suspension of mobile internet and data services in five districts—Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur.
Officials said the measure was aimed at preventing the spread of misinformation and curbing further escalation of tensions.
The use of a suspected rocket or mortar in a civilian area marks a serious escalation in Manipur’s ongoing conflict, which has persisted since 2023. The region has seen recurring violence along ethnic and geographical fault lines, with periodic flare-ups undermining fragile peace efforts.
The latest incident has once again highlighted the volatile security situation and the challenges facing authorities in restoring lasting stability.
