New Delhi: Seven people were killed while several others injured when fire broke out in shanties in North East Delhi’s Gokulpuri on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. The Delhi Fire Services said a call was received around 1am about a fire that had engulfed about 60 huts. The department said a total of 13 fire tenders were rushed to the spot to bring the blaze under control. As per the reports, it took nearly 3 hours to control the fire. A forensics team conducts tests at the spot in Gokulpuri area where a fire broke out in shanties last night, claiming seven lives.
“We recovered 7 charred bodies which are unrecognisable, it seemed that these people were sleeping & couldn’t escape as the fire spread extremely fast. 60 huts were also completely burnt. We are yet to know the reasons behind the fir”, said Atul Garg, Delhi Fire Director.

Manoj Tiwari, BJP MP from North East Delhi, reached the spot and took stock of the situation. Further expressing his grief over the tragic incident, Tiwari also met the families of the victims and prayed for the peace of the departed souls. He extended his condolences to the family also said that he stands with the family of every victim who lost their life in the fire accident. Tiwari also demanded a compensation of Rs 1 crore for each of the families that lost their loved ones and a compensation Rs 2 lakh each for the ones injured in the fire incident.
