In a significant move, the Supreme Court has ordered an independent probe into allegations of animal fat being used in the laddoos served as prasad at the renowned Tirupati temple. The court has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the matter, which will comprise two Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers, two state police officials, and a senior officer from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the central food regulator.
The bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan emphasized the importance of maintaining impartiality, stating that they do not want the case to become a political issue. “We clarify that we have not gone into allegations and counter-allegations. We will not permit the court to be used as political background,” said Justice Gavai. He stressed that the court’s focus is on addressing the issue of faith, which holds deep significance for millions of devotees worldwide.
Allegations Hurt Sentiments of Devotees
The allegations of using animal fat in Tirupati laddoos have created ripples across the country and have the potential to hurt religious sentiments on a global scale. The laddoos, served as a sacred offering at the Tirupati temple, are considered an important religious symbol. The court highlighted the need to resolve the issue swiftly and decisively to prevent any further escalation.
Justice Gavai remarked, “The allegations have the potential of hurting sentiments of people worldwide,” further underscoring the sensitive nature of the matter. However, the bench made it clear that they would refrain from delving into the political accusations related to the case.

The Political Backdrop
The controversy stems from an accusation made by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, who claimed that animal fat was used in the laddoos during the previous regime led by Jagan Mohan Reddy. This has sparked a heated political debate in the state, with both sides trading accusations. However, the Supreme Court bench made it clear that their mandate is strictly limited to investigating the allegations and not addressing the political implications.
Independent Probe to Ensure Transparency
The inclusion of officers from the CBI, state police, and FSSAI is intended to ensure that the investigation remains transparent and free from political influence.
