Celebrated Bollywood actor and filmmaker Tinnu Anand has come under fire after a controversial message he shared in his Versova residential society’s WhatsApp group went viral. The 80-year-old actor reportedly threatened to attack stray dogs with a hockey stick, triggering public outrage and prompting animal rights activists to take action.
The Message That Sparked Outrage:
The incident began when Anand expressed frustration over the constant barking of stray dogs near his home. In the group message, he warned fellow residents that if they did not take responsibility for the strays, he would be forced to take matters into his own hands—by hitting the animals with a hockey stick. The aggressive tone and content of the message led to a swift backlash, with many condemning it as cruel and irresponsible.
Police Complaint and Public Condemnation:
Following the message, Versova resident Aanchal Chaddha filed a formal police complaint, demanding accountability. Animal welfare organizations including the PAL Foundation and PETA India responded strongly, pointing out that harming stray animals is a criminal offense under Indian law.

Tinnu Anand Statement:
In his defense, Anand explained that his remarks stemmed from concern for his personal safety. “I am 80 years old. If a dog attacks me, I have no way to protect myself,” he said. Despite his clarification, the comment did little to pacify critics, many of whom called for legal action and greater awareness around animal protection.
A Larger Conversation:
The controversy has reignited debate around the humane treatment of stray animals in urban spaces. Advocates are calling for compassionate solutions like sterilization drives and community feeding programs instead of threats or violence.
This incident serves as a reminder that fear must never justify cruelty, especially toward voiceless beings.
