Sharmistha Panoli Arrest | In a swift inter-state operation, Kolkata Police on Friday night arrested Sharmistha Panoli, a law student from Pune, for allegedly posting offensive remarks related to Operation Sindoor on social media. The arrest was made in Gurugram after the video, which allegedly targeted a specific religious community, triggered widespread outrage online.
According to senior police officials, Panoli had uploaded a video on Instagram that contained “disrespectful and derogatory remarks” in response to a post related to Operation Sindoor. Though she later deleted the content, it had already gone viral and led to a formal complaint being filed in Kolkata.
An FIR was registered, and Kolkata Police initiated legal proceedings. Authorities stated that multiple attempts were made to serve Panoli with a legal notice, but she and her family allegedly went into hiding. A court in Kolkata subsequently issued a warrant for her arrest, prompting police to track her down to Gurugram, where she was detained and taken into custody.
Case Draws Legal, Political, and Public Attention
“The case pertains to an Instagram video by a woman named Sharmistha Panoli that hurt the religious sentiments of members of a particular community,” said a senior officer from the Kolkata Police. The case has become part of a broader conversation around social media accountability, religious harmony, and national security concerns in the wake of Operation Sindoor.
Operation Sindoor, a major anti-terror mission launched by India in response to a deadly attack in Pahalgam, has prompted a national wave of patriotic sentiment. Any perceived disrespect or insensitivity around it has faced swift legal and social consequences.

Following her arrest and public backlash, Panoli posted an unconditional apology on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “I do hereby tender my unconditional apology. Whatever was put are my personal feelings and I never intentionally wanted to hurt anybody, so if anybody is hurt I’m sorry for the same. I expect co-operation and understanding. Henceforth, I will be cautious in my public post. Again, please accept my apologies.”
Despite the apology, authorities maintain that the law will take its course, emphasizing that freedom of speech must be balanced with responsibility and respect for religious sentiments.
Police Confirm Legal Action Will Proceed
A court-issued arrest warrant led to Sharmistha Panoli’s detention in Gurugram after her controversial Operation Sindoor-related Instagram post went viral.
Legal experts suggest that this case could set a precedent for how digital speech, especially content that may incite or offend communities, will be handled moving forward. While freedom of expression is constitutionally protected, hate speech and incitement remain prosecutable offenses under Indian law.
