Sanjoy Roy Niece Death | Tension gripped Kolkata’s Bhowanipore area on Tuesday after locals assaulted a couple whose 11-year-old daughter, Suranjana Singh, was found dead in a partially hanging state inside a cupboard at their home the previous day.
According to police, the child was the niece of Sanjay Roy, the key convict in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case, who is serving a life sentence for the brutal killing of a young doctor.
The victim’s father, Bhola Singh, and his second wife, Pooja, were allegedly trying to flee the area when they were confronted by enraged neighbours.
A senior police officer said the crowd accused the couple of physically and mentally torturing the girl, leading to a violent attack.
Eyewitnesses reported that the stepmother was dragged by her hair and beaten, while the father was thrashed with shoes. Police later rescued the duo and escorted them to the Alipore police station for their safety.
Family’s Troubled Past
Investigations revealed that Bhola Singh had earlier married Babita, the elder sister of Sanjay Roy. Suranjana was their only child.
After Babita’s death by suicide a few years ago, Bhola married her younger sister, Pooja.
The couple lived with Suranjana in a small apartment where neighbours claimed the girl faced constant abuse and neglect.
The girl, a class 5 student, was found hanging from a hanger inside a wardrobe, with a piece of clothing tied around her neck.

Her stepmother reportedly discovered her body after returning home and rushed her to SSKM Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Police officers confirmed that the preliminary autopsy report has not ruled out foul play, and a detailed forensic examination is awaited.
“Initial probe suggested suicide. However, a possible homicide is not being ruled out,” a senior officer said.
Neighbours Allege Brutal Abuse
Locals described Suranjana’s life as one marked by cruelty.
“The child was often thrown out of the house at night, even as late as 2 am. The mistreatment had left her deeply traumatised,” a neighbour said.
The victim’s grandmother also alleged that the couple beat her with belts and often banged her head against walls over trivial matters.
Speaking to reporters, Bhola Singh said, “I have no child left. There is no meaning to my life anymore.”
The police investigation is ongoing, with forensic teams examining the crime scene and awaiting the final post-mortem report to determine whether Suranjana’s death was suicide or homicide.
