The father of the 31-year-old doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has made shocking allegations, claiming that he was initially told his daughter had died by suicide. The tragic incident, which has horrified the nation, has now raised questions about a potential cover-up by the hospital administration.
On Friday morning, the doctor’s father received a distressing phone call in which the caller informed him that his daughter had taken her own life. However, when the grieving father arrived at the RG Kar hospital, he was met with a much more horrifying reality: his daughter’s body was discovered half-clothed and bearing multiple bruises in a seminar hall. Subsequent investigations revealed that she had been raped and murdered in a vicious attack.
“The Assistant Superintendent of the chest medicine department called and said, ‘Your daughter died by suicide.’ And then we saw the reality when we reached the hospital,” the father told the media, expressing his disbelief and anger at the misleading information he was given.
Widespread outrage
These revelations have sparked outrage and fuelled suspicions of a cover-up by the administration at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. According to the ongoing investigation, the victim had dinner on Thursday night with four colleagues who were also on the night shift. The police are now questioning these individuals, along with others, to uncover the truth behind this gruesome crime.
In response to the growing public outcry, the Assistant Superintendent and Head of the Department of Chest Medicine at the hospital have been summoned by authorities. They are being questioned about why the victim’s family was initially told that she had died by suicide.

The victim’s mother, still reeling from the shock, revealed that even after they arrived at the hospital, they were not immediately allowed to see their daughter’s body. “I fell at their feet, begging them to let me see my daughter. But they did not. No one understands what I went through. They let us see her at 2 PM,” she recounted, her voice breaking with grief.
‘We want justice’
The family, devastated by their loss, has expressed their determination to seek justice. “We won’t get our daughter back, but we want justice for her. She went to serve the people and ended up sacrificing herself. We just want justice, we don’t want anything else,” said a relative, emphasizing the family’s resolve.
In the aftermath of the incident, RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has come under intense scrutiny, especially for its initial handling of the situation. Principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh resigned from his position, citing the humiliation and criticism he faced on social media over comments he claimed were falsely attributed to him.

However, his resignation was followed by another controversial development—within four hours, Dr. Ghosh was appointed as the principal of another medical college in Kolkata. This move has sparked protests among students at the Calcutta National Medical College, who have locked the doors of the principal’s office, vowing not to let Dr. Ghosh take up his new role.
Someone within the chest department was involved?
The victim’s family has also raised suspicions about the involvement of someone within the chest medicine department. “We want a probe against the whole chest department. We think someone on the inside is involved,” they stated, questioning whether this could have been a premeditated attack. The family’s concerns were echoed during a visit from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal.
“There were nurses and security. I am still unable to understand how this incident took place. Police have informed me that there was someone inside,” Chief Minister Banerjee said, acknowledging the possibility of internal involvement.
The state government has given Kolkata Police until Sunday to complete their investigation. If the case remains unresolved, the government has indicated that it will recommend a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, as demanded by the victim’s family. The public, outraged by this horrific crime, is now watching closely, demanding justice for the young doctor whose life was tragically cut short.
