Kolkata, along with several other parts of West Bengal, is set to witness a massive protest late tomorrow night as people take to the streets to condemn the horrific rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The protest is scheduled to begin at 11:55 PM and has been titled, “For Women’s Independence on the Midnight of Independence,” symbolizing a call for safety and freedom for women.
Social media platforms are abuzz with posters detailing the protest locations, with new spots being added as more people from across the state and its suburbs pledge their support.
Prominent faces in protest
The protest, initially driven by women, has also garnered significant male participation, as many men have vowed to stand in solidarity with the cause. Prominent figures such as actor Swastika Mukherjee, actor Churni Ganguly, and filmmaker Pratim D. Gupta have urged the public to join the midnight gathering at the most convenient meeting point.
The tragic incident has left Kolkata reeling. The 31-year-old doctor was found brutally murdered in a seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Friday morning. The victim, who was on night duty, sustained severe injuries to her eyes, face, mouth, neck, limbs, and private parts, sparking outrage across the city and beyond.

Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer known to frequent the hospital, has been arrested in connection with the case. However, the investigation is ongoing, with authorities leaving no stone unturned.
CM Mamata Banerjee’s ultimatum
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has given the city police until Sunday to complete the investigation, warning that if the case remains unresolved, the state government would recommend a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, should the victim’s family request it. “The state government has nothing to hide,” Mamata Banerjee stated, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to justice.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal assured the public that the investigation is progressing, with officers questioning everyone who was in the vicinity at the time of the crime. “We are certain that if there are other culprits, they will be arrested within the next four to five days,” Goyal said.
As Kolkata prepares for this midnight protest, the city’s citizens are united in their demand for justice and a safer environment for all.
