The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Rekha Gupta as Delhi’s new Chief Minister, bringing an end to the speculation over the capital’s leadership. Gupta, who will be the fourth woman to hold the post, is set to take her oath at the historic Ramlila Ground on Thursday.
Gupta secured her place in history after winning the Shalimar Bagh seat in the recently concluded Delhi Assembly elections. She triumphed over Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Bandana Kumari and Congress’s Parveen Kumar Jain by a margin of 29,595 votes, marking a significant victory for the BJP in the capital.
Political Journey of Rekha Gupta
Despite being a first-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), Gupta brings a wealth of political experience. Her career began in student politics at Delhi University, and she has since served three terms as a municipal councillor. She also held the position of Mayor in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), where she gained recognition for her administrative capabilities.
The BJP’s return to power in Delhi after 27 years was driven in part by a strategic focus on women voters. The party’s manifesto included several women-centric policies, such as:
– A monthly aid of Rs 2,500 for women
– A maternity benefit of Rs 21,000 for pregnant women
– Pension schemes for senior women citizens
These initiatives were seen as a direct challenge to AAP’s promise of Rs 2,100 per month for women if it retained power in the capital.
Rekha Gupta’s Selection and Community Representation
Before the official announcement, BJP insiders hinted at the possibility of selecting a leader from the influential Baniya community, which has a strong voter base in Delhi. Rekha Gupta, along with Vijender Gupta and Jitender Mahajan, was among the frontrunners for the position.

With her appointment, Rekha Gupta becomes the only woman Chief Minister from the current roster of BJP-led state governments, further highlighting the party’s emphasis on gender representation in leadership roles.
Oath-Taking Ceremony at Ramlila Ground
Rekha Gupta’s swearing-in ceremony will take place at Ramlila Ground, a location symbolic of major political and cultural events in the capital. The event is expected to be attended by senior BJP leaders, party workers, and supporters who see her leadership as a new era for Delhi.
As she steps into her new role, all eyes will be on how she implements BJP’s vision for Delhi and navigates the challenges of governing the national capital after nearly three decades of non-BJP rule.
