Rekha Gupta, the newly elected Chief Minister of Delhi, made history on February 20, 2025, as the first woman BJP leader to hold this position. Her landslide victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly Elections from Shalimar Bagh marked the BJP’s return to power in Delhi after 27 years, defeating AAP’s Bandana Kumari by a significant margin of 29,595 votes.
Born on July 19, 1974, in Haryana, Rekha Gupta moved to Delhi at an early age. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) from Delhi University’s Daulat Ram College and later pursued LLB from IMIRC College of Law, Ghaziabad (Chaudhary Charan Singh University, 2022).
Gupta began her political career with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) during her college years, later becoming General Secretary (1995-96) and President (1996-97) of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU). In 2007, she was elected as a councillor from North Pitampura, focusing on women’s empowerment and infrastructure development. She has also served as General Secretary of Delhi BJP Mahila Morcha and a member of the BJP National Executive Committee.
The BJP’s choice of Rekha Gupta over senior leaders like Parvesh Verma reflects the party’s focus on women leadership, trader community support, and grassroots governance. As CM, she has taken charge of key portfolios, including Finance, Revenue, and Women & Child Development, while Parvesh Verma oversees Public Works and Water, and Ashish Sood handles Home and Education.
Following her swearing-in, CM Rekha Gupta and her cabinet members performed an evening aarti at Yamuna’s Vasudev Ghat, symbolizing her commitment to Delhi’s cultural and environmental revival.
With her proven leadership, strong political background, and a vision for women’s empowerment and infrastructural growth, Rekha Gupta is set to reshape Delhi’s governance under the BJP’s leadership.
