In a significant development, the grandfather of a Pune teenager involved in a fatal Porsche accident has been arrested following allegations from the family’s driver that he was wrongfully confined and coerced into taking the blame. According to police sources, the grandfather faces charges under IPC sections related to kidnapping and wrongful confinement.

The Pune Police reported that efforts were made to force the driver to accept responsibility for the accident shortly after it occurred. Sources indicated that the grandfather locked the driver up and urged him to take the fall to protect the minor. The family assured the driver that they would secure his release if he complied.

Allegations against the grandfather and the minor’s father

“The teen’s grandfather and father allegedly seized the driver’s phone and confined him within their bungalow premises from May 19 to May 20. It was his wife who eventually freed him,” stated a crime branch official involved in the investigation.

The Pune Porsche crash happened since the car was allegedly being driven at 200 km per hour. The speeding car hit two techies, Ashwini Kostha and Anish Awadhiya, who were on a bike, resulting in their instant deaths.

The police disclosed that the 17-year-old driver of the Porsche, the son of a prominent Pune real estate developer, was heavily intoxicated at the time. Despite the severity of the incident, he was granted bail within 15 hours on what many consider lenient conditions: writing a 300-word essay on road accidents, assisting traffic police for 15 days, and undergoing counseling for his drinking habit.

Nationwide outrage led the Juvenile Justice Board to revise its decision, sending the teen to an observation home until the police’s request to try him as an adult is resolved.

Additionally, the boy’s father and employees of two bars visited that night were arrested under relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice Act.

Criminal connections of the family

The case has also highlighted the family’s alleged criminal connections. It recalls a 2009 incident involving an attack on Shiv Sena corporator Ajay Bhosale.

A CBI chargesheet from that case suggested that the boy’s grandfather, embroiled in a property dispute, had contacted notorious gangster Chhota Rajan to mediate. When Bhosale, who was preoccupied with Assembly elections, refused to intervene, the grandfather allegedly asked Rajan to eliminate him. A subsequent attack saw Bhosale’s car shot at, injuring his driver.

Ajay Bhosale, now with the Eknath Shinde-led Sena, told the NDTV that his ‘supari’ was issued by the builder, whose name is withheld as the accused in the Porsche crash case is a minor.

Although the grandfather was named in the chargesheet, he was not arrested. This attempted murder case is one of several against Chhota Rajan pending before a Mumbai CBI court.
