The political spotlight has returned to Sandeshkhali, with the Leader of Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, visiting the riverine island today, a day after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed the region. The visit reignited debates surrounding allegations of exploitation of women and land grab that had dominated headlines earlier this year, particularly during the Lok Sabha election campaign.
During her visit, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee dismissed the allegations tied to Sandeshkhali, calling them fabrications. “If someone misleads you, or lies to you, I know there is a huge game of money here. Later you saw everything turned out to be false. Lies don’t last long; they are exposed one day,” she said, urging women voters to remain vigilant.
She also appealed to the women of Sandeshkhali, saying, “Don’t fall into the trap of bad men. And women must remember not to go even if someone calls you.”
Suvendu Adhikari Hits Back
Suvendu Adhikari, a former close aide of Mamata Banerjee who joined the BJP before the 2021 Assembly elections, countered her claims. Addressing a gathering in Sandeshkhali, he announced plans for a commission to investigate the alleged incidents if the BJP comes to power in West Bengal.

“If there is a BJP government formed in the state, there will be a commission on the Sandeshkhali incident. And for the women you’ve sent to jail, remember the BJP will send you to jail for making these women go to jail in false cases. We will take revenge, with interest,” Adhikari said, intensifying the political confrontation.
Sandeshkhali in Focus
Sandeshkhali has been a significant talking point in West Bengal politics. During the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, it became a campaign centerpiece for the BJP, which highlighted allegations of exploitation and corruption by local leaders. However, despite the uproar, the Trinamool Congress retained the Basirhat Lok Sabha seat, which includes the Sandeshkhali Assembly constituency.
The BJP had fielded Rekha Patra, a local woman, as its candidate during the Lok Sabha elections, and the party is expected to nominate her again for the upcoming by-elections in Basirhat. The seat has been vacated following the death of Haji Nurul Islam, the sitting MP, making the Sandeshkhali issue a likely focal point once more.
By-Election Preparations
With the Basirhat by-election on the horizon, political parties are gearing up for another intense battle. Both Mamata Banerjee and Suvendu Adhikari are using Sandeshkhali to rally support and address key voter bases, especially women. While Banerjee seeks to dismiss the BJP’s claims and fortify her party’s position, Adhikari’s rhetoric underscores the BJP’s determination to leverage the allegations for electoral gain.
As the political tussle escalates, Sandeshkhali remains a microcosm of West Bengal’s larger political dynamics, with its residents caught in the crossfire of high-stakes political campaigns.
