A video of BJP MP Khagen Murmu kissing a woman on her cheeks during his campaign trail has sparked controversy, with the Trinamool Congress accusing BJP leaders of being anti-women.
The incident, which occurred during a campaign by Khagen Murmu in his Maldaha Uttar constituency in West Bengal, led to a heated exchange between political parties.
The Trinamool, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, condemned the incident and criticised BJP politicians for their alleged anti-women stance. Referring to previous incidents involving BJP leaders, such as allegations of sexual harassment against former wrestling body chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and criticism of songs by former BJP candidate Pawan Singh, the Trinamool accused the BJP camp of lacking respect for women.
However, the woman involved in the incident defended Khagen Murmu, describing the kiss as an “act of affection” and asserting that there was nothing inappropriate about it. She emphasized that Khagen Murmu is like a father figure to her, and she did not perceive any wrongdoing in his actions.
Khagen Murmu himself justified the gesture by stating that the woman is like his child, downplaying any controversy surrounding the incident. He criticized the Trinamool for politicising the matter and threatened to lodge a cybercrime complaint against the party.
The incident has sparked debate over cultural norms, perceptions of affection, and the role of political parties in interpreting such gestures. While some view it as harmless affection, others criticize it as inappropriate conduct, reflecting broader societal attitudes toward physical contact and boundaries.
