Pawan Singh, the Bhojpuri singer and actor who hit headlines after his entry in politics, has announced his decision to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the Karakat parliamentary constituency in Bihar as an Independent candidate.
This comes after he withdrew his name as the BJP nominee for the Asansol constituency in West Bengal.
Expressing his determination to fulfill a promise made to his mother, Pawan Singh said, “‘Mata Gurutara Bhumeru’ means mother is mightier than this land and I had promised my mother that I would contest the elections this time.” He emphasised his commitment to contesting the elections from Karakat, Bihar.
In Karakat, Pawan Singh will face competition from Rajaram Singh of CPI(ML) Liberation, which is a part of the RJD-led mahagathbandhan in Bihar.
The grand alliance, comprising the Rashtriya Janata Dal, Congress, Left parties, and Mukesh Sahni’s Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP), has announced its candidates for various constituencies in Bihar.
The decision by Pawan Singh to contest independently follows his withdrawal from the Asansol constituency, where he was initially nominated by the BJP.
Although he did not specify the reason for his withdrawal, his candidature had faced criticism from the TMC due to alleged objectionable content in some of his songs.
However, Pawan Singh later reaffirmed his intention to participate in the elections, citing his commitment to society. While the BJP has replaced him with SS Ahluwalia as its candidate for Asansol, Pawan Singh is now focused on his independent candidacy in Karakat, Bihar.
