In a major embarrassment for the Trinamool Congress (TMC), bitter infighting among top party MPs exploded into the public domain on Tuesday after BJP’s Amit Malviya released a leaked video and WhatsApp chat screenshots showing a fierce exchange involving senior Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee.
The incident, which took place on April 4 at the Election Commission of India headquarters, reportedly followed a heated argument between Banerjee and another MP — widely believed to be Mahua Moitra — as party leaders submitted poll-related documents.
The Video That Sparked It All
In the video posted by Malviya, Kalyan Banerjee can be heard shouting, “They are so unruly… I won’t allow illegal work.” A voice resembling Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien tries to calm him down: “We are in a public space, brother. I’m pleading with you.”
Another person warns Banerjee, “This will get leaked in the media,” to which he retorts, “Let it be. I want it to be out in the media.”

According to India Today, Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee has personally intervened, directing both MPs to “calm down” and not escalate matters further.
Leaked WhatsApp Group Chats Add Fuel
Alongside the video, screenshots allegedly from the party’s internal WhatsApp group ‘AITC MP 2024’ show Banerjee launching a verbal tirade, calling out a “versatile international lady” and targeting Kirti Azad.
Kirti Azad responded sharply: “Take it easy Kalyan… Don’t act like a juvenile delinquent. Act like an adult.”

Banerjee hit back, “Don’t advise me, Kirti. You were thrown out from BJP for doing internal politics… You are still captain of doing internal politics.”
Mahua Moitra, Modi, and Mamata
Although Mahua Moitra hasn’t publicly commented on the matter, senior MP Saugata Roy confirmed to media that Moitra was seen “crying in Parliament” after the incident and intended to lodge a complaint.
Roy slammed Kalyan Banerjee’s “intemperate behaviour” and demanded his removal as the party’s Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha. “There is deep resentment among party members about how Kalyan Banerjee behaved. This is unacceptable,” Roy told reporters.
Banerjee, meanwhile, alleged that the unnamed “female MP” had shouted at him and asked CISF to arrest him. Taking a dig, he added: “This lady has no issue in her politics except Modi and Adani. She never challenges any other BJP leader. Who is she?”
BJP Smells Blood
Amit Malviya’s social media posts quickly gained traction, with BJP supporters calling the episode a “meltdown” and “Trinamool in tatters”.
According to TMC sources, Mamata Banerjee is “extremely upset” over the public fallout and is personally investigating both the verbal spat and the WhatsApp leak.
Party leaders have been instructed not to speak to media or post online to avoid worsening the situation, insiders said.
