K Kavitha, daughter of former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, was apprehended by the CBI on Thursday from judicial custody in Tihar jail. She had been held there following her arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

According to the CBI, K Kavitha is deemed one of the “key conspirators” in the liquor policy case and is believed to be withholding crucial information exclusive to her knowledge.

Live Law quoted a CBI counsel as telling the court, “Kavitha examined earlier in this case but in light of evidence unearthed in the investigation…Role of statements revealed that she is one of the key conspirators in the excise policy. She didn’t join investigation citing unjustified ground and hence she could not be examined…During her interrogation, she didn’t give satisfactory replies regarding her role…She needs to be confronted with evidence to unearth the larger conspiracy concerning the liquor policy.”

As per an India Today report, the CBI informed the court while seeking the custody of K Kavitha that her involvement in a conspiracy to solicit a Rs 100 crore kickback from a liquor baron had surfaced during the investigation.

The agency alleged that a southern businessman met Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at his office, where Kejriwal purportedly assured him of support and directed him to contact K Kavitha.

“One liquor businessman from the south met Arvind Kejriwal at the Chief Minister’s office chamber in Delhi on March 16, 2022. He sought the Chief Minister’s support. Arvind Kejriwal assured him and said K Kavitha would contact him in this regard. Kejriwal asked for funds in exchange,” the agency asserted.

K Kavitha, aged 46, was arrested by the ED from her residence in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, on March 15 in connection with a money laundering case related to the Delhi excise policy scam.
