Renowned boxing champion Mary Kom has withdrawn from her role as India’s chef-de-mission for the upcoming 2024 Olympics in Paris, citing personal reasons, as per a report by a news agency. Kom expressed her regret over stepping down from the commitment but stated that she felt compelled to do so.

“Embarrassing to retreat from a commitment, but I am left with no choice,” Mary Kom told the agency.
The decision comes after Mary Kom was appointed as the chef-de-mission in March this year by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). The IOA believed Kom was an ideal candidate to guide and mentor the athletes participating in the Paris event. It was planned for luger Shiva Keshavan to work as her deputy.
“Mary Kom’s unparalleled dedication to sports and inspiring journey makes her a natural choice to guide and mentor our athletes at the Olympics,” commented the IOA.
“Keshavan, a former Olympian in luge, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to support the team’s management and coordination efforts.”
Meanwhile, Sharath Kamal is set to carry the Indian flag at the Olympics this year.
As the chef-de-mission, the role of Mary Kom was pivotal, serving as the head of the national team at the Olympic Games. She was tasked with leading and representing the team, managing logistics, coordinating travel arrangements, liaising with the host country’s Olympic organizing committee, ensuring compliance with Olympic regulations, handling any issues, and providing support and guidance to athletes and officials throughout the Games.
The chef-de-mission plays a crucial role in fostering an optimal environment for their country’s athletes to compete and succeed in the Olympics.
