The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its list of 66 candidates for the upcoming Jharkhand Assembly elections, featuring veteran leaders like former Chief Minister Babulal Marandi and Champai Soren, who is also a former CM and a close aide of current Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
The list, released on Saturday, comes shortly after Chief Minister Hemant Soren declared that the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Congress will contest 70 of the 81 assembly seats in the state.
Key Candidates and Alliances
Babulal Marandi, the state BJP president and former Chief Minister, will contest from Dhanwar, while Champai Soren, along with his son Babulal Soren, will contest from Saraikella and Ghatshila, respectively. The BJP has allocated 68 seats to its candidates, while its allies — the All Jharkhand Students’ Union (AJSU) — will contest 10 seats, the Janata Dal (United) on two, and the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) will contest the Chatra seat.
This announcement for the Jharkhand Assembly polls 2024 reflects the BJP’s strategy to go head-to-head with the ruling JMM-Congress alliance, which is fielding candidates in 70 constituencies.
Political Dynamics in Jharkhand
The BJP’s decision to field strong candidates like Babulal Marandi highlights its intent to regain control in Jharkhand after losing to the JMM-Congress-RJD coalition in the 2019 Assembly polls.

Marandi, a key figure in Jharkhand politics, is expected to play a crucial role in leading the party’s campaign. Champai Soren, a senior JMM leader turned BJP ally, and his son Babulal Soren will also be pivotal in the party’s electoral strategy in tribal-dominated constituencies.
With both the INDIA alliance and NDA gearing up for a fierce contest, the Jharkhand Assembly polls 2024 are shaping up to be a high-stakes battle. Voting will take place in two phases on November 13 and 20, with results expected on November 23.
