U.S. Vice President JD Vance, currently on a four-day visit to India, held a closed-door meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. Their discussion took place against the backdrop of global uncertainty stemming from the ongoing U.S.-China trade war.
The high-level meeting was followed by delegation-level talks and comes at a time when India and the United States are in the final stages of negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement aimed at mutual economic benefit.

President Trump, who had earlier imposed an additional 26% tariff on Indian goods—on top of an existing 10%—has temporarily suspended these new “reciprocal” tariffs for 90 days. Economists view this pause as a critical window of opportunity for both nations to finalize a “win-win” trade deal.
A Pivotal Trade Agreement between two Countries in the Works
India and the United States share a unique and strategic partnership, often regarded as the world’s foremost democratic allies—the former being the largest democracy, and the latter the oldest.
The White House has emphasized that under the Trump Administration, strengthening ties with India remains a top priority. A trade agreement is being actively pursued, partly to offset the impact of the ongoing trade tensions with China, the world’s leading manufacturing hub. While Indian leaders had initially projected an agreement by autumn, efforts are now underway to conclude it by the end of July—coinciding with the peak of the monsoon season.
However, India has firmly stated that it will not be rushed or pressured into finalizing a deal. New Delhi has made it clear that an agreement will only be signed if it adequately addresses India’s interests and concerns.
According to Bloomberg, a senior official in New Delhi indicated that focused trade negotiations across specific sectors are scheduled to take place this week, following a meeting between Prime Minister Modi and U.S. Senator JD Vance. The report also suggested that a new target is being considered—to finalize the trade pact by the end of May.
JD Vance’s Heartfelt Message at Akshardham Temple
The Vice President, who received a formal guard of honour upon arrival at Delhi airport, was welcomed by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. His children, dressed in traditional Indian outfits, quickly won hearts with their graceful embrace of Indian culture.
The family’s first stop was the Akshardham Temple, where Vance appeared deeply moved by the intricate architecture and the serene spiritual atmosphere. In a handwritten message, the Vice President expressed his appreciation:
“Thank you so much for your hospitality and kindness in welcoming me and my family to this beautiful place. It is a great credit to India that you built a beautiful temple with precision and care. Our kids in particular loved it. God bless.”

Shopping for Indian Handicrafts at Janpath’s Cottage Emporium
After their temple visit, the Vances headed to the Central Cottage Industries Emporium at Janpath, where the family spent about 45 minutes exploring Indian handicrafts. They reportedly purchased papier-mâché items, honey, tea bags, brass artifacts, and pottery.
Store managers recounted the visit fondly, praising the Vances for their humble demeanor.
“They really appreciated our goods. Usha Vance was especially fond of the art and craft, and the kids were enthusiastic about the handmade gifts,” said showroom manager Meetu Wazirani.
The visit underscored the family’s personal connection to India through Usha Vance’s heritage, as well as their genuine interest in India’s rich artisan traditions.

Vance’s Cultural Tour: Jaipur and Agra on the Agenda
The Vice President’s four-day visit also features a personal and cultural itinerary. The Vance family will travel to Jaipur on April 22, where they will tour the Amer Fort and other heritage sites. Later that day, JD Vance will address a gathering of diplomats, policy experts, and government officials at the Rajasthan International Centre.
The following day, the family will visit Agra’s Taj Mahal and Shilpgram, an open-air market dedicated to Indian crafts and folk art, before returning to Jaipur later that evening.
The visit is widely seen as an effort to strengthen India-US ties under President Donald Trump’s administration, signaling continuity in strategic cooperation and economic engagement between the two democracies.
