Justice Yashwant Varma impeachment Updates | The Lok Sabha will soon consider a government-sponsored impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma, currently serving as a judge in the Delhi High Court, after piles of burnt cash were discovered at his residence in March.
The move signals the government’s intent to take the lead in addressing alleged corruption within the judiciary, the NDTV reported.
According to the information, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will now constitute a committee to examine the charges against Justice Varma. If the committee finds credible evidence, it will recommend impeachment to the House.
This government motion comes after an earlier, opposition-backed proposal, accepted by then Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, is set to be discarded. Sources said it was never formally tabled in the Upper House, and hence holds no procedural value.

The impeachment process gained fresh urgency after a high-level government meeting on Wednesday was held to strategise on reclaiming the anti-corruption narrative from the opposition, especially ahead of critical elections in Bihar, Bengal, and Tamil Nadu.
The BJP had drafted its impeachment motion ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which began on July 21, and had approached opposition parties to seek bipartisan support. A number of opposition MPs signed the document, sources confirmed.
However, the process took a surprising turn when former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar referenced the opposition motion in the Rajya Sabha, disrupting the government’s consensus-building efforts. According to sources, Dhankhar’s move was seen as a breach of a mutual understanding that all parties would handle the issue in a unified manner.

His unexpected resignation—citing ill health—followed soon after, and is believed to be closely linked to this development.
In the aftermath, government sources indicated that had Dhankhar consulted them beforehand, the BJP would have signed the opposition motion, preserving its public leadership in the matter.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission has initiated the process to elect a new Vice President, with officials stating that India will have a new Vice President by the end of August.
