New Delhi has expressed strong support for the forthcoming high-level discussions between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin focused on resolving the ongoing Ukraine conflict. The meeting, set to occur in Alaska, represents a potential breakthrough in efforts to restore peace, aligning with India’s long-held advocacy for dialogue over military action.
MEA Backs Diplomatic Push for Ukraine Resolution
The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the positive implications of the summit, scheduled for August 15, following announcements from both Washington and Moscow. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that the talks could pave the way for concluding the hostilities and fostering stability in the region.
“India welcomes the understanding reached between the United States and the Russian Federation for a meeting in Alaska on August 15,” Jaiswal stated. “This meeting holds the promise of bringing to an end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and opening up the prospects for peace. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said on several occasions, ‘This is not an era of war’.”
He added, “India, therefore, endorses the upcoming Summit meeting and stands ready to support these efforts.” This endorsement underscores India’s proactive role in promoting non-violent resolutions to international disputes.
Trump shared details of the event on his Truth Social platform, noting: “The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the US, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place next Friday in the Great State of Alaska.”
PM Modi’s Consistent Advocacy for Dialogue
India’s position remains rooted in calls for negotiation and diplomacy to address the Russia-Ukraine tensions. During a recent phone call with Putin, Prime Minister Modi was updated on the situation and reinforced the need for amicable settlements.
“While thanking President Putin for his detailed assessment, the prime minister reiterated India’s consistent position for peaceful resolution of the conflict,” according to the MEA.

Reflecting on past engagements, Modi visited Moscow in July last year and conveyed to Putin that battlefield solutions are unviable, stressing that peace initiatives falter amid ongoing violence. In the following month, during his trip to Kyiv, Modi urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to engage directly with Russia promptly, affirming India’s alignment with peace from the conflict’s outset.
These interactions illustrate India’s balanced approach, positioning the nation as a mediator committed to global harmony.
