As temperatures soar across West Bengal, authorities have issued a warning of an imminent heatwave which is set to grip the region from April 20 to April 24, 2024. The warning, prompted by dry westerly to northwesterly winds and intense solar insolation, highlights the potential for severe heatwave conditions in various districts.
Recent observations reveal alarming spikes in temperatures, with South 24 Parganas and West Burdwan districts already experiencing severe heatwave conditions. Other regions, particularly Gangetic West Bengal, have also recorded temperatures significantly above normal, indicating the severity of the heatwave.
Friday’s maximum temperature in West Bengal peaked at 44.0°C in Panagarh, marking a staggering departure from the seasonal average. Projections for the upcoming days indicate a continuation of these extreme conditions, with temperatures expected to remain well above normal levels across Gangetic West Bengal.

Impact of heatwave
The potential impacts of the heatwave are grave, with a high risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat strokes, particularly among vulnerable populations such as infants, the elderly, and individuals with chronic diseases. Symptoms such as weakness, dizziness, headache, and nausea should not be taken lightly, and immediate medical attention is advised for anyone experiencing such signs.
How to tackle heatwave conditions
In addition to medical precautions, the IMD urged people to take proactive measures to mitigate the effects of the heatwave. These include avoiding outdoor activities during peak sun hours, staying hydrated, wearing lightweight and light-colored clothing, and recognizing the signs of heat-related illnesses.
As West Bengal braces itself for the onslaught of scorching temperatures, the importance of preparedness and caution cannot be overstated. By heeding the warnings and implementing preventive measures, individuals can safeguard themselves against the potentially life-threatening effects of the looming heatwave.
