India on Friday responded to recent critical remarks by US President Donald Trump, reaffirming the resilience of the India-US relationship. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the strategic partnership between the two countries is rooted in shared democratic values and strong people-to-people ties.
“India and the United States share a comprehensive global strategic partnership anchored in shared interests, democratic values, and robust people-to-people ties,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during the ministry’s weekly media briefing. “This partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges.”
The response came a day after Trump imposed a 25 per cent tariff on India and referred to the Indian economy as “dead.” Addressing these developments, Jaiswal maintained that the two countries remain focused on a substantive bilateral agenda. “We remain focused on the substantive agenda that our two countries have committed to and are confident that the relationship will continue to move forward,” he said.
Strong Defence and Energy Cooperation Will Continue, Says MEA
Speaking on India-US defence cooperation, Jaiswal emphasised that the partnership has strengthened significantly in recent years. “There is potential for this partnership to grow further,” he noted.

When asked about India’s energy procurement strategies, the MEA reiterated that decisions are made based on national interest and current global market conditions. “In securing our energy needs, we are guided by what is on offer in the markets, and by the prevailing global circumstances,” Jaiswal stated.
