Digha Jagannath Temple Inauguration Updates | On the eve of the grand inauguration of the Jagannath Dham temple in Digha, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee participated in a solemn maha yajna as part of the final spiritual preparations. The yajna began on April 25 and culminated today, setting the stage for the Akshaya Tritiya inauguration ceremony on Wednesday.
Banerjee, donning traditional attire, offered prayers, performed the Purnahuti ritual, and conducted the aarti herself, underscoring her personal devotion to the project. The yajna involved the burning of 100 quintals of mango and bel wood, along with two quintals of ghee, symbolizing spiritual purification and divine illumination.
The spiritual ceremony was conducted in collaboration with 60 ISKCON members and 35 priests, while Rajesh Daityapati and his team from the Puri Jagannath Temple participated and will also oversee the Pran Pratishtha (idol consecration) of Lord Jagannath.
Inauguration to Take Place on Akshaya Tritiya with Traditional Fervor
The temple inauguration will take place between 3:00 PM and 3:10 PM on May 1, coinciding with Akshaya Tritiya, a highly auspicious day in the Hindu calendar. The Chief Minister will officially open the temple in front of a massive gathering of devotees and dignitaries.
“The type of architecture built by the workers is wonderful. It is the same as Puri Jagannath Temple. Bengal is proud—not just Bengal, the whole world will be proud,” Banerjee said during the ceremony.

Spanning 20 acres, the Jagannath Dham temple in Digha is a replica of the iconic Puri Jagannath Temple, constructed in the Kalinga architectural style. Built entirely of pink sandstone from Rajasthan, the temple is a testament to craftsmanship and cultural devotion.
Key highlights of the temple complex include:
- Garbhagriha (inner sanctum) housing the deities
- Bhog Mandap for cooking sacred offerings
- Nat Mandir (dance hall) for devotional performances
- A striking 34-foot-long Arun pillar with 18 faces made of black stone, topped with an Aruna idol
- Four grand gates: Singhadwar, Byaghradwar, Hastidwar, and Ashwadwar
Over 800 skilled artisans from Rajasthan worked on the temple, which cost the state government ₹250 crore. The project was originally announced by Mamata Banerjee in 2019 and faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bengal’s Spiritual and Cultural Legacy Strengthened
The new temple is expected to become a major pilgrimage destination and tourism hotspot, strengthening Bengal’s position on India’s spiritual map. Traditional rituals such as daily flag-changing ceremonies will be carried out by priests from Puri, maintaining age-old customs.
The Jagannath Dham in Digha is not just a religious structure but a symbol of Bengal’s rich heritage and spiritual aspirations, as envisioned by the Chief Minister herself.
