The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has stated that there is no link between Covid-19 vaccines and the recent rise in sudden deaths due to heart attacks in India. The clarification comes in the wake of a nationwide debate triggered by a series of high-profile deaths, including that of actor Shefali Jariwala.
Citing comprehensive studies by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the ministry said, “Extensive studies by ICMR and AIIMS on sudden deaths among adults post-COVID have conclusively established no linkage between COVID-19 vaccines and sudden deaths.”
It further added that the vaccines used in India have been proven “safe and effective” by both ICMR and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), with serious side effects being “extremely rare”.
Scientific Experts Call Misinformation “False and Misleading”
The statement also addressed the rising speculation that Covid vaccines may be responsible for a surge in sudden cardiac deaths since 2020. “Sudden cardiac deaths can result from a wide range of factors, including genetics, lifestyle, pre-existing conditions, and post-COVID complications,” the ministry said, while urging the public not to fall for unfounded claims.

Experts reiterated that linking sudden deaths to vaccination is scientifically incorrect and lacks medical consensus. “Statements linking COVID vaccination to sudden deaths are false and misleading,” the statement emphasised.
Shefali Jariwala’s Death Highlights Public Anxiety
The death of actor Shefali Jariwala at the age of 42 last week renewed public fears surrounding unexpected heart attacks. The television personality reportedly collapsed at her Mumbai home on Friday night. Her husband, actor Parag Tyagi, rushed her to Bellevue Multispeciality Hospital in Andheri, where she was declared dead on arrival.
According to police sources, initial findings suggest a sudden drop in blood pressure may have led to cardiac arrest. “We are awaiting the post-mortem report,” a police officer said, while ruling out any foul play.
The case of Jariwala’s untimely demise is one of several recent incidents involving sudden cardiac deaths among relatively young individuals, many of whom had recovered from Covid-19. These occurrences have fuelled speculation about potential vaccine side effects—an assumption now thoroughly debunked by the ICMR-AIIMS research.
The ministry hopes the findings will help dispel myths and encourage continued public trust in India’s Covid-19 vaccination drive.
