A day after taking over the investigation into the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team arrived at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The CBI has taken custody of Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer accused of the crime, and will subject him to a medical examination. The agency is employing a three-pronged strategy: one part of the team will inspect the seminar hall where the victim’s body was discovered, another will present Roy in court to seek his custody, and the third will coordinate with Kolkata Police, who were initially handling the case.

The CBI has identified six key areas of focus in the investigation. These include probing the possibility of gang rape, determining whether Roy acted alone or with accomplices, and investigating whether evidence was tampered with or destroyed after the crime.

Additionally, the CBI will explore why the incident was initially reported as a suicide, why law enforcement was informed about the murder after a delay, and whether there was any involvement by the hospital administration.

The CBI’s involvement in the case was a primary demand of striking doctors, who hope that the investigation will now be conducted with the thoroughness it warrants. The agency’s Special Crime Unit will search for forensic evidence such as fingerprints, footprints, hair, and semen to establish Roy’s involvement.

Reports suggest that Roy had washed his clothes after the crime, but traces of the victim’s blood were still found on his shoes. The victim’s parents have submitted to the High Court that 150 mg of semen was found in her body, indicating gang rape, and they have criticized the lack of action to arrest additional suspects, arguing that the evidence strongly suggests the involvement of more than one person.

Despite the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) calling off the strike, doctors across several locations continue to protest, with organizations like the resident doctors’ association of AIIMS in Delhi differing with FORDA’s decision.

The striking doctors are advocating for the passage of a Central Healthcare Protection Act to prevent attacks on medical personnel. While 19 states have enacted laws for the protection of doctors, there is a call for a central law to ensure uniform protection nationwide.

The trainee doctor was found raped and murdered inside a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Friday morning. Her autopsy report indicated that she suffered multiple injuries before being smothered to death, with the time of death estimated between 3 and 5 am. The CBI’s intensive investigation, involving medical and forensic experts, is expected to uncover all aspects of the crime, with findings eagerly awaited by the public and medical community alike.
