The shocking case of a 31-year-old doctor who was raped and murdered at a government hospital in Kolkata has now been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following a petition by her parents. The Calcutta High Court’s decision comes after disturbing details emerged from the postmortem report, which indicated the possibility of gang rape.
In their plea, the victim’s parents revealed that the postmortem report confirmed their worst fears, citing strangulation as the cause of death and clear signs of sexual assault.
The report, they said, disclosed that a significant amount of semen was found in their daughter’s body, suggesting the involvement of multiple perpetrators. “The devastating details of the postmortem confirmed the brutality of the attack on their daughter,” the petition stated.
The parents’ petition described the horrific injuries their daughter sustained, including trauma to her head, injuries to both ears, and wounds on her lips, indicating she may have been silenced or gagged during the attack. Bite marks on her neck further underscored the severity of the assault.

150 mg of semen
The autopsy revealed 150 mg of semen in the victim’s body, a quantity that, according to the petition, strongly suggests gang rape. The parents expressed their frustration that despite clear evidence of multiple assailants, only one individual, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer known to frequent the hospital, was arrested by the state police before the case was transferred to the CBI.
The petition also criticized the hospital administration, particularly the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Dr. Sandip Ghosh. The high court questioned why the hospital authorities did not immediately report the doctor’s death to the police and expressed concern over the state government’s decision to appoint Dr. Ghosh as the principal of another medical college just hours after his resignation from RG Kar Medical College.

The parents further alleged that the autopsy was conducted hastily, with the intention of shielding others who may have been involved in their daughter’s death. They claimed to have learned from reliable sources that evidence suggested at least three individuals were involved in the strangulation.
The state government, in its defense, stated that the inquest was conducted in the presence of a Judicial Magistrate and two female doctors, with the victim’s mother signing the inquest report. The government also maintained that the postmortem was conducted under judicial supervision and that the entire process was videographed to prevent any allegations of foul play.
Following the court’s order, the CBI has taken over the investigation. The agency’s team, which includes medical and forensic experts, has been divided into three groups to conduct a thorough investigation. One group will visit the seminar hall where the doctor’s body was discovered, another will handle the custody of the accused, Sanjoy Roy, and the third will coordinate with the Kolkata Police, who were initially investigating the case.
The nation awaits the findings of the CBI investigation, as the tragic case has drawn widespread outrage and demands for justice.
