A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) delegation was blocked from entering the Hyderabad Central University (HCU) campus today as student protests against the redevelopment of 400 acres of land near the university turned chaotic. The Telangana police stopped BJP leaders from visiting the site, citing security concerns, as clashes between students and police escalated.
BJP Leaders Detained Amid University Land Controversy
Alleti Maheshwar Reddy, BJP’s floor leader in the Telangana assembly, claimed he was not allowed to step out of his house without prior notice from the police. Other BJP leaders also alleged they were stopped from leaving their residences.
Videos circulating online showed BJP MLAs being detained outside their state headquarters as they attempted to visit the university.
“The government can bring money from wherever it wants, but it cannot generate another land adjacent to the university. They should withdraw their thoughts of selling those 400 acres of land,” BJP MLA Payal Shankar told ANI.
Students Continue Protests Against Land Redevelopment
The protests erupted after the Telangana government issued an auction proposal for the 400-acre land to develop an IT park. While the government argues that the project will attract investments, students claim it will cause environmental destruction, harming local flora and fauna.
Tensions escalated on Sunday when bulldozers arrived to clear the land. Protesters climbed onto the machines and raised “Go Back” slogans, leading to direct confrontations with the police. Several students were detained but were later released.

The Hyderabad Central University Students’ Union has vowed to continue boycotting classes until the government provides a written assurance that the land will be formally registered under the university.
Political War Over Hyderabad Central University Land Dispute
The issue has turned into a political flashpoint in Telangana, with the BJP’s involvement adding further heat to the controversy. The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has accused the police of mishandling the protesters, while the Congress-led state government maintains that the land belongs to the government, not the university.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy dismissed the students’ claims, stating that they were being “instigated” and that the land had “no connection” to the university. Meanwhile, BRS leader KT Rama Rao criticized the Congress government, accusing them of “killing green space and wildlife.”
“The government knew Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday were holidays, which is why they chose to cut down 400 acres of forests, killing green space and wildlife. Students of the University of Hyderabad are requesting environmentalists to speak up to save the HCU forests,” KT Rama Rao said.
Heavy Police Deployment Around University Campus
To prevent further clashes, the Telangana police have increased security around the Hyderabad Central University campus. Officials justified the police action, stating that the students were obstructing government work.
As the political battle over the Hyderabad Central University land row intensifies, the protests are likely to continue, with students and opposition parties demanding government accountability.
